Fume Extraction

Solder-Fume filter packs comprise of a separate Pre-filter and a HEPA-Gas combinational filter; useful life will be affected by the frequency of use and the particulate/chemical composition of the agents being passed through the filter media.

When the filters are nearly blocked, the system will give a visual or audible indicator that the filters needs to be changed.

As gas filters become fully saturated, the chemical’s odour will be present in the exhausted air and should be changed as soon as possible. For filtration of odourless vapours, a third-party air-quality meter should be used and the filter should be changed when the Parts Per Million (PPM) values approaches unsafe limits. These values can be found on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product being filtered.

Generally, one 5-pack of pre-filters will be used per HEPA-Gas filter for optimal performance.

SmartHeat - Fixed Temperature Systems


While the GT units use an inductive heater, these heaters are not controlled by the Curie Point principle. A RTD temperature sensor and an advanced PID algorithm regulate the tip temperature. 

200 to 450 °C (392 to 842 ⁰F) 

Both handpieces (T4 and T6) can be used with either the GT90 or GT120 systems. 


Calibration is not required for the HCT-900 convection hot air system.

Metcal SmartHeat® soldering, rework and de-soldering systems, including CV, MX, MFR and PS-900 do not require calibration.

Each Metcal SmartHeat® soldering cartridge or tip contains a self-regulating heater element. The heater temperature is set by the chemical composition of the heater alloy material and cannot be adjusted.

Temperature control in a SmartHeat® system is regulated by the inherent physical properties of the heater element material in the solder cartridges and tips. There are no adjustments to be made to the power supply, handpiece chord or coil assembly.

As there are no adjustments for the SmartHeat® system, no calibration is required.

Calibration is not required for the Metcal DX-250, DX-350, DX-255 and DX-355 Digital Dispensers.

GT systems are designed to the latest IPC-J-STD specifications and do not need to be calibrated for the following reasons: 

– Programming during the production process has been completed to account for any drift in component characteristics and is under microprocessor control.

– Heating element for GT cartridges and tip heater cartridges have been designed and controlled to meet IPC requirement of ±10⁰C temperature delta.

– The life of the RTD temperature sensing element embedded in the cartridge is much longer than the cartridge itself.

To meet tighter specification needs, GT systems offer a user-configurable temperature offset feature.

All Metcal soldering, desoldering, and rework systems are designed and tested to meet or exceed all applicable ESD and EOS Standards which apply to soldering products.

Metcal soldering systems offer superior EOS/ESD protection. Because our soldering systems deliver continuous current, they cannot generate switching transients.

Typical values for tip-to-ground resistance and tip potential are 0.8 ohms and 1.0mV RMS, well within the commercial / international specifications.

Metcal also offers extra protection against potential ground faults in its CV, MX, and MFR Series Soldering Systems with an Auto – Off feature. This feature senses the DC continuity (resistance) of the output cable and handle assembly through the cartridge. If the resistance of the output circuit exceeds a preset reference level, the system is turned off. This is fail-safe protection against any ground loss.

On the Metcal CV, MX, and MFR Series soldering systems, a ground fault monitor is built into the power supply to continuously monitor the AC supply (mains) ground circuit. In the event of a mains ground failure or if the mains ground should go out of specification; the system is immediately switched off and the system cannot be re-powered until the mains ground is restored.
